Excerpt from a clairvoyant and medium’s diary.

Cousin Jens – a queer cousin.

In February I was contacted by Yrsa, a woman from the southern archipelago of Funen.
She had had some funny experiences. Some years ago she had enherited a small country house with some land. The country house consisted of a farmhouse and some smaller extensions in which there had previously been animals. The farmhouse had been in the family for a couple of centuries. The woman’s parents had lived in the house a couple of decades before Yrsa took over the place in 1993.

In the extensions some strange things had started happening with some inherited effects, these were moved around and her sheep and goats had started to become restless and ill.

The veterinarian had been there several times, but he had not been able to find any reason for their illness. The veterinarian had established that the animals were suffering from some kind of stress. This was established by some blood tests which showed that certain substances were shown to be raised.

The things which were moved around were placed in the loft of one of the extensions – older furniture which had been passed on through generations.
We agreed that it would be appropriate for me to visit Yrsa.
And that is what happened. One cold day in February I was on the ferry from Svendborg towards the island. A magnificent passage – even though it was blowing a bit. Yrsa met me at the ferry berth. Yrsa was quite different from what I had expected. Yrsa was an artist. She worked with paintings and sculptures. Her works are exhibited in well-known places.

At the arrival at the country house Yrsa told me, that her sleep had been disturbed since we had arranged my visit a couple of days ago. Her two pedigree cats had been quite confused. They had behaved strangely. They had been out doors all the time, and they hadn’t eaten anything. These experiences had frightened Yrsa. In a pure dialect of Funen she said: “I will not put up with this commotion.”
There was no doubt in my mind that Yrsa had a visitor from the other side. At our first telephone conversation my immediate experience was that this was about a family member! In the farmhouse and the extensions I tried to form a general view of the dimensions of the task, and I tried to find out who haunted Yrsa’s home.
Yrsa was in two minds about believing in it or not. Repeatedly I had to calm her down by saying: “You do want peace here, and you do want the animals to get well, don’t you?” Particularly the last part of the sentence made sense to Yrsa. Just like most people Yrsa of course was curious.

All the earlier mentioned heirlooms such as furniture, books, and clothes and so on were kept in the loft of the extension where the animals were. The second time I mounted the latter to the loft I was met by a coldness and a fusty smell. A man of medium height with a bent bag was standing there. He stared right into my face. He was not physical. Via my faculties I was able to see him. He was quite nice. He invited me over to an old rocking chair where he asked me to sit down. His clothes were rumpled and ragged, he was untidy, and his breath was stinking. Inspiring – don’t you think!
Carefully I asked who he was. Silently he looked at me and answered mentally:
“Who are you and what are you doing here?” Mentally I explained to him, that Yrsa felt unsafe at being at the country house, and the animals were getting ill. This was not how it should be. Again he looked at me for a long time. This time he was chewing something which might have been chewing tobacco. Time was nearly standing still. I tried the same question once more. Deep silence again. My experience was that he considered the question very carefully.

After quite a long time he said: “I live here. These are my furniture. This loft is not the right place for them. Their right place is in the living room. The animals are not mine. I had cows and calves, and I kept poultry. I don’t want Yrsa’s animals and all her visitors at my country house.” I asked who he was, and why he was at the country house. “I am Cousin Jens.” And then he told me the following: “I was the owner of the country house for 20 years, before Yrsa’s parents took over the place.”

He showed me a suitcase filled with old photographs. I called Yrsa. Cautiously she came up the latter. I asked her to open the suitcase. Cousin Jens asked me to take out an old, faded  photo album with leather binding. On page number five there was a family photograph where the whole family was together in 1974. The photo showed a birthday party. “Do you remember this photo, Yrsa?” I asked. Quite confused Yrsa verified this. I pointed to a gentleman, whom Cousin Jens showed me. An elderly gentleman, a little untidy, at 70 years was the key figure – he was Cousin Jens.
“Is he the one?” Yrsa exclaimed. “He was kind of the simpleton of the village, a bit of a sly boots, and hardly anyone knew him – nobody in the family really knew him.”

After a long mental talk with Cousin Jens, I succeeded in convincing him that he had to leave Yrsa and the animals alone. He didn’t like the thought very much, but in the end he consented in doing so. After this Cousin Jens left everyone at the country house alone.

When we were sitting in the kitchen again, it turned out, that five hours had passed. As arranged with Yrsa, I have left out quite a lot of details.
Now we have reached the month of May, and all is well at the country house. The animals are well, and the cats behave like cats normally do. And I have a permanent invitation to visit Yrsa this summer. I look forward to that.
